Sexuality and spiritual evolution

Sexuality

G ovinda Kai teaches Ashtanga yoga according to Pattabhi Jois and has been concerned with spirituality since he was a teenager. His life experience includes contact with a wide variety of spiritual traditions. Numerous celebrities from the international A-league take lessons with him, but above all he inspires countless non-celebrity yogis around the world who come to his workshops. He was born in San Francisco, but now lives in Japan, where his family roots lie. YOGA AKTUELL met Govinda Kai at the last YCG in Cologne. There he gave a lecture on the subject of sexuality.

When you engage with aspects of life or aspects of yourself with a certain level of alertness, many areas that once seemed downright dangerous or in which you were in danger of losing yourself suddenly become a source of wisdom.

What are your reasons for addressing the topic of sexuality?

Govinda Kai: For me, yoga is essentially a practice of self-questioning and self-discovery. It’s about developing a deeper understanding of yourself. When one penetrates certain areas of life with awareness and care, they can become a source of greater understanding, a source of experience. Controversial areas in particular are often such a source. And sex, apparently one of the most controversial and sensitive areas in human culture, is a topic through which one can get to know oneself and others better.

Sex is not primarily an act. It is not just something we do with our sexual organs. But what is he then? What is its essence? It is the ecstatic dance between consciousness and life, between the sacred masculine and the sacred feminine, and it is happening in every moment. Let’s not focus on the physical side of sex. Sex is an aspect of our being, an aspect of consciousness itself.

So sex can be a kind of door to spirituality… How would you describe the spiritual aspect of sexuality?

Sexuality holds a profound potential for spiritual connection, offering a gateway to transcendent experiences. At its core, the spiritual aspect of sexuality is about intimacy, vulnerability, and the dissolution of boundaries between individuals. Through the act of sex, partners can merge not only physically but also emotionally and energetically, transcending the confines of the self and experiencing a sense of unity with each other and with the universe.

This deep connection can evoke feelings of ecstasy, bliss, and profound love, leading to a heightened state of consciousness where time seems to dissolve and the ego fades away. Many spiritual traditions view sexual energy as a powerful force that can be harnessed for personal growth and spiritual awakening, emphasizing practices such as tantra and sacred sexuality to cultivate awareness, presence, and connection. Ultimately, the spiritual aspect of sexuality invites individuals to explore the depths of their being, to connect with others on a soul level, and to experience the divine within themselves and their partners.
